The Family Caregiver's Journal
A Guide to Facing the
Terminal Illness of a Loved One
by Hank Bruce & Tomi Jill Folk
260 pages, 6"x9" trade paperback
ISBN: 0-7880-1434-X
$14.95
Written in memory of Hank's mother who passed away in 1997, this book answers many of the questions he faced as she became a hospice patient in the authors' home. Because so much energy in the caregiving process is spent in direct contact with the loved one, it is easy for the primary caregiver to feel alone, even with other loved ones nearby. One of the most frequent comments we have heard is that it is obvious we have lived the process, as the book is written in snippets--for that was often all the time available to grab and read it. In fact, many have chosen it as their "book in the bathroom" as that was the only time they felt was truly their own, and they always seemed to find exactly what they needed to learn, to get through the hours ahead. Some used the journal space to write their own reactions; others chose to keep a private notebook, so they could pass the book along to the next friend who might need it.
With more and more baby boomers now caring for aging parents, or people of any age looking after disabled family members or friends, hospice programs are finding Caregiver to be an invaluable gift. It is useful in support groups and by individuals. The authors interviewed numerous hospice staff members and heard amazing stories of the blessings and miracles they had been gifted to witness. Caregiving is one of the most difficult, emotionally draining jobs for which few of us are trained; but with the help of the information and encouragement found in these pages, it can also be a time of making wonderful memories and returning the love that first brought us into this world. The book is intentionally inclusive of a variety of faith traditions, using factual information, stories and poetry to make the caregiving role much less lonely.

Anthology of the Year
Peace Beyond All Fear
by Hank Bruce
178 pages, 8 ½ x 11" trade paperback
ISBN 978-0-9797057-3-1
$19.95
Written in 2007 to honor the tenth anniversary of the loss of a true visionary, this book was one of the first to be presented a New Mexico Book Award. A book release party was celebrated at the Albuquerque Peace and Justice Center. Even more special was the opportunity to sign the book at various events at Aspen in October, a celebration of John Denver fans from all over the world. Hank also signed copies at the open house of the Windstar Foundation, an organization which was founded by John Denver and his close friend Tom Crum. Perhaps the brightest moment of that event was when Hank was able to meet Erma Deutschendorf, JD's mother, and present her with a copy of the book, and thank her for sharing her son with the world.
